Flutter-by socks
These are done. I’ve even written up the pattern in two formats. Further details can be seen in the finished object post or in the full pattern (see below).
They only need a wash before they’re sent off to my Sockapalooza pal on 2nd August. I think I can manage.
Download the full pattern or the chart-only if you’re more experienced.
This is the first pattern I’ve ever written up. If you come across any errors or are confused by anything, please let me know!
For other insect-related socks, watch out for Domesticat’s Drunken bee socks which have a very pretty heel.
Edited to add
First, thanks for all the positive comments on the socks. It’s really appreciated!
Second, I’ve just had a look at the PDFs again and noticed two errors - one in the caption for the images for making the flutter-by (and the number of times I proofed these! Argh!) and one in the chart. Something happened with the chart when it was converted to PDF. I have now updated the PDFs so that they are correct. Apologies for the inconvenience.
And if you do decide to knit these socks, please let me know and send along a picture as I will start a gallery for them!

Wow! Those are gorgeous. Thank you so much for writing up the pattern! They really set of the variegation in a stellar way!

Wow! You’re fast! Thank you! This is definitely a good pattern to show off highly variegated yarn if you don’t want to do stockinette or ribs (believe me, I tried stockinette, ribs, and 2 other patterns before deciding on this one).

Very pretty! Thank you so much! It’s just what I was looking for for my sock pal. I’ve tried a few great patterns but they just didn’t work out. Again! Thank you SO MUCH!

You’re very welcome! Please let me know if there’s anything that doesn’t make sense. I’d also love to see how yours turn out if you knit them.

Oh, I love these socks. And the yarn you chose really is perfect. Beautiful work!

Thank you! The yarn is so variegated that I just couldn’t find a pattern that it worked with and I didn’t want to do plain old socks!

Oh, hello, squee!
Love the socks.
Love the shoes…

beautiful! nice work on the pdfs too. i’m sort of dreading writing a pattern really. like i say i want to just write out the chart and let experienced sock knitters figure out the rest (to avoid 1. me having to write everything out and 2. if i do i just know it will be riddled with errors, even though there isn’t necessarily a wrong way, blah blah). but i have a feeling i just be writing the whole damned thing out.
your sock pal will love these.

The yarn is just perfect for the pattern. Now you have to make a pair for you! Thanks for sharing your Ireland and kitty photos. :) Hope you are feeling better these days.

[...] From The Yarn Miracle, Haystack socks (scroll down — pattern here in PDF) which are billed as socks for the “uncooperative colo(u)rway”. It looks like a good choice for a highly variegated yarn much like the Flutter-by socks. [...]

These are so gorgeous. I’ll be another one queueing them up in Ravelry.

That’s a great pattern for verigated yarn!
Can you give us shoe details?

Cool! :)
The pattern looks very professional, and the pictures are great.
A boring, traditional, full view picture would be nice as well, though, to see things like edge finishing, how long the socks are, etc.
It’s a bit like Erika Knight’s book Baby Bloom, which only shows detail pictures - it’s hard to know whether you’ll actually like the finished design, and when the patetrn is difficult to understand, there’s no picture to refer to for guidance…Although I guess it’s more important for a jumper than for a pair of socks :)
